Goals
- To define recommendations for implementation of sustainable computer facilities that are adequate to the teaching and learning goals of the education system.
- To raise awareness of the need to use low power consumption and low maintenance computers in schools, and the fact that they are available, and sufficient for most educational applications.
Objectives
- To define minimal usability requirements for computers in schools that are adequate for the needs of the education system.
- To produce recommendations and procedures for installation of computer equipment in schools, including requirements, necessary engagements from the schools, installation methods, maintenance engagements and procedures.
- To obtain and disseminate data and results on the usability, sustainability and costs of different types of computers and setups, including full computers and different options for thin-client configurations, as well as information on the adequacy of these computers and configurations for schools.
- To set up a model that is able to define an optimal sustainability factor for adequate school facilities taking into account power consumption and maintenance.
facilities.
Results
- Define a sustainability model for school facilities that takes into account the interrelationships between power consumption and maintenance.
Activities
- Specify factors, tests and scales that can be used to measure adequacy of computers for school usage. Define minimal usability requirements based on these factors.
- Define different technical scenarios for installation of computer facilities in schools. Define the technical requirements that the schools should comply with prior to the installation of the computers. define protocols for installation, including training of teachers, security and maintenance. Draft separate manuals that include all these requirements, procedures and protocols, one for each scenario.
- Define minimal financial and operational engagements that schools need to accept, in order to ensuring that the computer facilities will stay in use.
- Test the different scenarios for school facilities, and produce reports on the advantages, disadvantage, costs, maintenance predictions. Produce recommendations on the circumstances in which each scenario is most adequate.
- Test different hardware to calculate its usability and sustainability factors. Produce reports on the findings.
- Define sample bids for computers to be used by Ministry and donors.
- Produce recommendations on computer casing for schools that optimize sustainability.
- Do research on factors that affect power consumption and maintenance of computers in school facilities, and the interrelationships among these factors and with external variables (such as the cost of parts). Define a model that takes into account these interrelationships.
